Rio de Janeiro City launches tax settlement program

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall issued Municipal Decree No. 52,449/2023 , which sets the requirements and conditions for taxpayers to join its newly launched program called ‘Carioca em Dia’ (Rio Citizens in Good Standing).

The program provides for the settlement of tax and non-tax debts registered as overdue tax liabilities whose taxable events had taken place on or before December 31, 2022, and grants installment plans for the payment of liabilities pertaining to local taxes (IPTU, ISS, ITBI), fees and fines, among other charges.

As per the rules, those who join the program may benefit from a 10% to 100% reduction in fines and late-payment charges, with a possible 60%, 50%, 40%, 25%, and 10% reduction of the principal amount for those who choose to settle their debts in 12, 18, 24, 48, and 60 consecutive monthly installments.​

Applications must be made by August 11, in person at the City Hall service stations or online, and will only be processed once the taxpayer has either paid the bill in full or settled the first installment.
