Has your tax return been flagged for review? Here's what to do now
Inconsistencies in your Individual Income Tax Return (IRPF) may lead to issues with the Revenue Service
The 2026 Individual Income Tax Return filing season ended on May 29. However, for some taxpayers, the process of reporting to the tax authorities is not yet over. It is important to check whether your tax return has been processed without issues or has been selected for a tax audit.
According to information from the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service, approximately 3.97 million tax returns had pending issues in 2025. The agency is expected to release an updated report with this year's figures soon.
Can a tax return be flagged for review?
After a tax return is filed, the Federal Revenue Service analyzes the information provided by the taxpayer. This data is cross-checked against records submitted by other sources, such as companies, banks, health insurance providers, and other institutions. If discrepancies are found, the tax return is flagged for review due to pending issues.
How can I check if my tax return has been selected for a tax audit?
The Revenue Service provides online services that allow taxpayers to check for any pending issues with their tax return, even before receiving a formal notice. Through the e-CAC (Virtual Service Center) portal, you can verify whether there are any errors or inconsistencies and, if necessary, take corrective action before the situation becomes more complex.
What should you do if your tax return is held for review?
If your tax return is under review, the first step is to identify the inconsistency that was flagged. If you have not yet received a formal notice from the Revenue Service, you may file an amended tax return to correct the information. However, if you have already received the notice, you will need to provide supporting documentation to substantiate the reported information and wait for the tax authority's review.
My tax return is correct, but it is still being held for review. What should I do now?
If you are confident that the information reported on your tax return is accurate and you have all the supporting documentation, you may request an expedited review of your tax return through the e-CAC. This option is typically available at the beginning of the year following the filing of the tax return and may help speed up the release of your tax refund.
What if there is a penalty?
If errors are not corrected within the required timeframe, the official penalty may reach up to 75% of the assessed tax. However, if the issue is resolved before the deadline, the penalty may be reduced by 50%, bringing it down to 37.5%.
In addition to the penalty, failing to regularize your tax situation may lead to other consequences, such as restrictions on obtaining loans, difficulties updating official documents, and obstacles to taking office in public positions.
For this reason, it is always advisable to resolve any outstanding tax issues as soon as possible to avoid more serious complications.
