Did you get caught in the tax audit? Understand how to regularize your situation
Inconsistencies in the IRPF declaration can cause the taxpayer to face issues with the Tax Authority
The 2025 tax return season for the IRPF ended on May 30th, but some taxpayers are not free from reporting to the Federal Revenue Service. It is still necessary to check if they are fully compliant with the tax authorities or if the declaration was caught in the fiscal grid, commonly known as the "fine mesh” (Tax Audit).
According to data from the Federal Revenue Service, in 2024 alone, 1.4 million declarations were flagged by the "Tax Authority," representing 3% of the total. This year, the agency is expected to release a report with these figures soon.
What is "fine mesh"?
When the taxpayer submits their declaration, it is analyzed by the Federal Revenue systems. The information is compared with data provided by other entities, such as companies, financial institutions, health plans, and others.
How to know if you’ve fallen into the fine mesh?
The Federal Revenue Service provides tools that allow you to check if there are any issues with your declaration even before being formally notified.
Through the e-CAC website, you can check for errors or inconsistencies, allowing you to act quickly and, if necessary, correct the situation before it worsens.
What to do if you get caught in the fine mesh?
If your declaration is held, the first step is to identify and correct the error. To do this, you can file a corrected declaration, as long as you haven’t been notified by the Federal Revenue Service. If you have already received a notification, you will need to provide supporting documents and wait for the analysis to progress.
Correct declaration, but still held?
If you are certain that your declaration is correct and you have all the supporting documentation, you can request an early analysis of the fiscal grid through e-CAC, which usually opens the window at the beginning of the year following the submission of the declaration. This initiative speeds up the process and avoids delays in refunds.
What if I have to pay a fine?
If the errors in the declaration are not corrected within the deadline, the fine can reach up to 75% of the amount of tax due. However, if the correction is made before the final deadline, the fine is reduced to 20%. In addition to the fine, there are other consequences that can affect your financial and personal life, such as restrictions on obtaining loans, difficulties in updating documents, and impediments to holding public office.
Therefore, it is ideal to resolve any pending issues as soon as possible to avoid further complications.
